My vision for FUTMINNA –VC
The
Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA)
Prof. Musibau Adewunmi Akanji, has explained his vision for the
development of the school.
Prof. Akanji said he had commenced steps that would assist in moving the institution from its present 21st position among Nigerian universities to the best university in the nation.
He said: ‘’I want to improve on our national ranking and secure African recognition for the university. My happiness is that with the caliber of the people I met on ground in the university, I believe within the next one year, our ranking will be improved.’’
Akanji, who is the 6th vice-chancellor of the institution, spoke to journalists in Minna, the Niger State capital, promising to, within the first one year of his five years tenure, propel the institution to international ranking as well as a hub of scholarly distinction.
He also promised to run an open administration where everybody would be carried along before major decisions are taken.
The vice-chancellor said: “I promise to be a listening leader and not a boss.”
FUTMINNA was recently adjudged by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as one of the two institutions with A+ ranking among all Nigerian universities.
Prof. Akanji, who hails from Essa Ward, Offa, Kwara State, was born on January 4, 1953 and succeeded Prof. Mohammed Salihu Audu, whose tenure ended on November 26, 2012.

ICT of Pride
The wonderful Silicon Valley of today was not built in one day, in fact
its story will not be complete without remembering the man who first set out to
make it a world destination for telecommunication research - Professor
Frederick Emmons Terman of Stanford University. The faculty of
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Federal University of
Technology Minna was set up and commenced operation in the 2009/2010 Academic
Session under the administration of the Vice chancellor, Professor M. S. Audu,
a globally recognized authority in Abstract Mathematics, an administrator par
excellence equipped with a passionate commitment for implementing and
developing information and communication technology. The faculty had Professor
Joseph O. Odigure as its pioneering Dean who did tremendously well in setting
up the foundation of today’s Prof. Audu’s ICT faculty of pride.
With a vision to be the world class centre of Excellence in training
and research in information and communication technology in Nigeria, the
faculty is on a mission to build excellent research capacity and develop high
quality human capacity through pragmatic and Dynamic Training, Research and
Entrepreneurial services for the Information and Communication Technology
Sector in Nigeria in Particular and the world at Large
Blessed with a very conducive ICT complex which is a modern master
piece of novel architecture, the faculty is also lucky to have one of the best
team of staff drawn from leading research and academic institutions across the
globe as well as state of the art equipments for learning and research, the
faculty is already on a suitable altitude for safe cruising.
Today, the faculty of ICT has over 130 staff, interestingly many of the
staff are currently enjoying staff development study opportunities in world
class institutions.
Beginning with only a hand full of students in 2009, the faculty today,
has grown to over a population of 1500 students, undergoing Bachelor degrees
programs in Computer engineering(CPE), Telecommunication engineering, Computer
Science (CS),Information and Media Technology (IMT), Cyber security Science
(CSS) as well as Library and Information Technology(LIT). The Post-Graduate
programs have also become a side attraction to many students all over Nigeria.
Towards ensuring the implementation of information and communication
technology,
- The university’s
information Technology service (ITS) has also been established, which currently
runs a 2 year diploma program in Computer Networking, Web development and
Database management. Asides been a Cisco networking academy certified
institution for internationally accredited training.
- Also a 24hrs campus
wide internet facility is made available via both cable network to lecture
rooms, offices and laboratory and also wireless wide area network for the
general university community
- And finally the all
computerized electronic test centre.
Additionally, the newly found Centre for Open
Distance & e-Learning (CODeL) is another great achievement worth
chronicling. CODel enables students to achieve the same quality of university
education with regular university students but with the advantage of been open
distance learning on ICT platforms. Students will not need to stay on campus as
course material and lectures are all via e-media. At present time the centre
offers B Tech programmes in Mathematics, Physics, Information Technology,
Mathematics Education, Physics Education, Computer, Science, and Cyber Security
Science. Other programmes shall be introduced as the relevant requirements are
satisfied by the responsible Departments.
Thanks to God for the foresightful leadership of our ICT
compliant Father, the Federal University of Technology Minna has become a hub
for developing the next generation of ICT global giants.

Chronicle of the Struggles
Since that first day in November 2010 that I first resumed
school as an Undergraduate FUTmite, a lot of events have spurned my yearning to
have or enjoy a platform where the little moments that makes our entire
experience of the university society can be noticed, appreciated and reviewed.
Every single moment that goes past by is one that can never again be experience
whether it be good, bad, sweet or sour. I have learnt to live everyday as it
comes and make the most of it.
When I first launched this blog sometimes ago my hopes of
having time to be committed to updating it was not met. Today I am back because
a series of events have kept reminding me of my deserted blog.
As I look back at my fresh registration days, the difficulty
of passing through a first semester having resumed as late as February 17
without accommodation and having to adapt to the new university system, the
high moments of good result and the low moments of missing results to this
moment of my writing this blog post, am also reminded of the glory days of my
participation in the Muksit Campaign for NUESA, Project Jefferson Campaign for
SUG and my own transforming candidacy for ICT presidency. The pictures are
fresh in my own memory especially since I have been at the centre of the events
and carry a scar of the good and the bad, but all these are not available to
the majority of those who will be reading this post. The events of my first
meeting with IGWE and the then president SLY on 25th November 2010
at the OTOBO student Union Secretariat in Bosso, the starting days of Future Generex,
the NUESA and NESA presidential debates are also part. And most recently, the SWEP Events &
Awards of 2011/2013 which I adjudge as the best.
It becomes more clear to me that the necessity of keeping a
personal diary of words and picture about these life changing events cannot be
over emphasized, even more, keeping it open will someday in some way motivate
some other person I do not yet know, even in the event of failure to do these I
will have left an archive that tells a near complete story of the struggle in
FUTMx.
On this note I welcome you to MyFUTMinna.blogspot.com. Read
it, Make honest comments and observation and Share it.

Still on the Struggle
Alot is been said all over campuses about the struggles for the welfarism of the Greatest Nigerian Students, perhaps because elections are fast approaching. While I will prefer to see men act the great words they speak, I think the piece below is worth sharing.
OF A TRUTH I BELIEVE THAT, THE PRICE OF FREEDOM IS RESPONSIBILITY. We must consciously take upon us the responsibility to know our rights and privileges, and most importantly deploy a resilient spirit and method in challenging the shameful oppression that bedevil us as youthful Nigerians.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Segun Shuaib wrote this on OVERTNIGERIA.
"Oppressed people deal with their oppression in three characteristic ways. One way
is acquiescence: The oppressed resign themselves to their doom. They tacitly adjust
themselves to oppression, and thereby become conditioned to it. In every movement toward freedom some of the oppressed prefer to remain oppressed. Almost 2,800 years ago Moses set out to lead the children of Israel from the slavery of Egypt to the freedom of the promised land. He soon discovered that slaves do not always welcome their deliverers. They become accustomed to being slaves.
They would rather gear those ills they have, as Shakespeare pointed out, than flee to
others that they know not of. They prefer the “fleshpots of Egypt” to the ordeals of
emancipation.
There is such a thing as the freedom of exhaustion. Some people are so worn down by the yoke of oppression that they give up. A few years ago in the slum areas of Atlanta, a Negro guitarist used to sign almost daily: “Been down so long that down don’t bother me.” This is the type of negative freedom and resignation that often engulfs the life of the oppressed.
But this is not the way out. To accept passively an unjust system is to cooperate with
that system; thereby the oppressed become as evil as the oppressor.Non-cooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good. The oppressed must never allow the conscience of the oppressor to slumber... Yours in Struggle
